Ilkeston Partnership GCSE Geography Conference

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Today, Year 11 GCSE Geographers from four schools across Ilkeston came together for a revision conference.

The schools involved were

Kirk Hallam Community Technology College

Ilkeston School

St John Houghton

and Bennerley School

The students were treated like conference delegates, each having their own conference badge, pack and arranged seating place. Let’s not forget the pencil, with laser engraved motif! (Thanks Mr Hamer for these :) )

We focused on the generic for the conference.

Mr Thomson delivered sessions on unpacking an exam question and using maps and aerial photographs.

Mr Poland, apart from adding energy to the event ;) , focused on data handling and ran a table country competition.

Mrs Marston, did a great decision making exercise, focusing on wearing the right hat for the examiner!

Mr Storey, did the leg work today, organising prizes and general goodies.

I did a presentation on specific geography revision techniques, I wasn’t that impressed with my performance, particularly because the ICT let me down. (I promised after my last presentation never to use a foreign computer again, apart from my Betty ;) ), but I received some nice feedback from students and staff at the end.

My presentation can be downloaded here (PPT 3mb), apart from the video clips, which didn’t work anyway!

Also nice to see some of our Ex-Geographers now doing A-level, brief words with Foxy, Ian H and Matt B.

Thanks to all the students from all schools, your behaviour and attitude was excellent. For any Year 11 readers, please feel free to leave comments, this was the first time through and we are keen to improve the event.

How we shopped in the past?

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Year 8′s are/will be looking at shopping, so are Year 10 at GCSE! On the GCSE blog, I’ve asked staff to write about their shopping memories, they make interesting reading. How are they different to how you shop today? Post your ideas below…

GeogGames.

Due to the popularity of the Geography simulations, I’ve now added them to the left sidebar under GeogGames.

How we used to shop? Oldies version.

This one is for the staff and those readers outside of College. I would like you to think back a couple of years (more for some ;) ),

how did your family shop in the past?

Please can you tell us anything about the following….

How did your family do their main ‘shop’? In one visit, several stores (Name, names!), on the High Street etc..

How frequently do you remember your family shopping?

How did your family get their shopping home?

What did your family do if they ran short of an item?

Any little anecdotes about shopping in the recent past…

For example, a memory from me..

‘I remember we always had fish on a Friday night, after attending primary school, we would visit Mr Turner on Watnall road, my mother would buy five pieces of fish, which were first wrapped in white paper and then newspaper…’

This is a brilliant geographical simulation game, take a potential disaster and prepare an area against destruction.  I did well with the Hurricane simulation, let me know what you think.

Good idea or bad idea? Vote in the Poll or leave a comment below. I completely dislike it, apart from losing an hour, which could be spent sleeping, it also messes with your blog timestamp, so apologises for those that have struggled to leave a comment. :)
