One to watch- When hell freezes over…
Tonight
Channel 4 9.00 p.m.
Looks useful… especially for Year 10 that start their coursework soon and for Year 11 as revision.
Australian explorer and geologist Douglas Mawson’s 1912 Antarctic expedition was one of unfathomable hardship and tragedy. His companions Dr Xavier Mertz and Lt Belgrave Ninnis both perished – Ninnis first, falling into a crevasse with the bulk of their supplies. Even supplementing meals with sledge-dog meat couldn’t stave off the effects of malnutrition and exhaustion, and Mertz died, too, probably from the effects of too much toxic dog liver. Mawson was then alone, with just a few basic rations to sustain him for the 315-mile trek back to camp. Stopping short of actually eating dogs, Aussie adventurer Tim Jarvis attempts to re-create Mawson’s cruel journey. He fastidiously replicates almost every element, from calories consumed to primitive equipment and Mawson’s woefully inadequate clothing.
Description from the Radio Times.
I couldn’t find any information surprisingly on the Channel 4 website, but I did find a nice list of Antarctica travel tips, which might be useful Year 10 in the near future…. Wanda
