Things I’ve been reading…

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

I’m always interested in the reading material of others, Alan does this often on GeographyJazz, so I thought I would start to blog my reading material and encourage a bit of literacy.

Finished last week the Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, much here for Geographers to consider, the development of disaster capitalism and its impact on nations. Very depressing, as well as very enlightening.

Brain Rules

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

Brilliant presentation derived from the Brain Rules by John Medina, lots here for educators to think about. The book hasn’t been released in the U.K., but can be preordered on Amazon, the website has a great wealth of information.

mainLogo Just playing with a new web tool called MyStudiyo, it allows you to produce multiple choice quizzes that can be embedded into blogs and web pages, you can also provide a link to the quiz on the website. Very useful because it allows you to monitor the results of answers, so you can target revision. Users, in this case students, can also register, so you can judge an individual’s strengths and weaknesses. I’ve put together a simple example below.

Geographical bias? – Belgrade Eurovision 2008

I’ve updated my task from last year for Belgrade 2008 (Word 200 doc kb). I’m going to use the map of voting patterns from 2007 as a starter. There was also an interesting piece on the B.B.C. about the influence of population demographics on voting.

I thought the voting has a bit more open this year… but the songs weren’t as good. My personal favourite was Iceland. Still can’t believe that Andy received less points than Spain… pure madness.
