Unreported World- Cyclone Sidr

A B.B.C. documentary about the impact of Cyclone Sidr three months on, I think I’ll return and use this later in the year. It will compliment well the Bangladesh resources that I produced on my return from Bangladesh.

As part of my International study visit to Bangladesh, one of my targets was to produce an educational resource. This is now complete.

The resource is based on Cyclone Sidr and is aimed at Key Stage 3, it consists of six lessons and forms a complete case study.

Overview of the lessons.

Lesson	Ideas	Resources
1	Rationale- why study this event? Formation of the Cyclone Sidr. Cyclone protection in Bangladesh.	PowerPoint with linked video and embedded animation. Student worksheet about the formation of the cyclone.
2	Causes, Impacts & Responses.	PowerPoint introducing classification task. Student worksheet-classification task.
3	How quickly will Bangladesh cover?	PowerPoint comparing development statistics of the U.K. and Bangladesh. Student response worksheet.
4,5,6	Levelled assessment.	Students to produce a PowerPoint storyboard about the cyclone for B.B.C. news 24. Task worksheet. Assessment criteria. Outline PowerPoint.

If you do utilise the resource, please could you consider donating to the cyclone emergency disaster fund, Bangladesh when I visited was just recovering from the floods of the summer, the cyclone has compacted the problems that the country faced, particularly in rural areas. To put our wealth into context, £150 would build a three bedroom house in Tanguil…

Some random things…

I’m feeling awful and should be marking Stringy’s RE mock, but thought I would do a little blog post instead. The Ilkeston Geographers decided on AQA as our new A-level syllabus, for the new sixth form… looks interesting. Content looks like it will reflective the Pilot. We should be able to provide more information on the course on Wednesday night, both myself and Mr Thompson will be delivering the course. Please feel free to express an interest. Yes, there was talk of an Ilkeston Geography website and blog.

We have heard from our friends in Bangladesh, all is well…. I’ve now marked Year 11 coursework, the Severn case study, and Year 10 Option 1 Wanda. I will be giving feedback when I next see you. Year 11 Geographers are reminded that their next piece on sustainable flood management is due in on Friday 14th of December.

Just a gentle reminder that Year 10 Option 2 need to hand in their Wanda coursework on this Friday.

Also picked up a link to a Geography blog that was new to me, Ayrshire Geography, one north of the border and another to add to the feeds.

The presentation I gave to staff tonight about part of my experiences in Bangladesh, the quality is poorer because I’ve had to save the slides as jpegs and reinsert them. Slideshare doesn’t seem to like complex presentations sometimes . Not much information as I wanted to speak from personal experience, but some interesting pictures showing school life in the country.
